The Smell of Freedom is combination of three different perfumes invented by Simon Constantine. Simon created these scents based on three different survivors of hardships. What each survivor had in common was freedom, which is why the name of the final perfume. The three different parts that make up The Smell of Freedom are: Part 1- Fire Tree, Part 2- Old Delhi Station, and Part 3- Oudh Heart. The stories that simon wrote on the making of these three parts are on the Gorilla Perfume blog.
I won The Smell of Freedom solid perfume from eBay a while back. I was excited to receive it because it was one of the old push up solids in the black tube. What I learned from that is I am so glad that they changed the packaging. Once you push the perfume up, there is no going back down from there, you can only push it up. The cover is indented a bit at the top as well so if the perfume is not flat and you would like to close it fully it will be smushed and then get stuck on the top of the cap. The tube is cute but not practical at all.
The overall texture is much smoother than my current solid perfumes. Rather than having to melt it by rubbing my fingers over it several times, it is already at a consistency that reminds me of a thick cream. I can describe it as Lemony Flutter texture but mine is a few years old so that may be the reason behind that. I am not sure if this is due to the age of the solid, but I do have an even older solid perfume and that one is dryer and hardened.
Unfortunately this is a solid perfume and will not be as pungent as liquid ones from my experience. Solid perfumes do not have DRF alcohol in them taking that alcohol-like scent out of the mix. The first scent I pick up from it is the spiciness, and it smells of ginger root. The sandalwood takes over too but it is not overbearing. This is more of a woody one due to the Oudh and Sandalwood. The Jasmine definitely can be smelled as a very muted undertone and makes the perfume just a smidge sexier as always. If anything the sandalwood is the main note for me, or my nose just loves to pick up that. It is spicy and reminds me of an incense, without the burning smell. The Agarwood, Oudh Oil mixed with Sandalwood and Fire Tree Oil creates the woody scent that mellows out to a more muted fragrance.
I would say this fragrance together as a whole is wonderfully invented and smells very good. When I wear it it will stay with me for hours and passes through each of it's spicy layers throughout that time. It definitely mellows out on the skin and is not as BAM woody as you smell it straight from the tube. It's a very warm scent and I even get some floral notes coming through as it is on my skin. I do not really smell the lemon right away but as a rub it in it gets a bit more zingy. The description is pretty spot on, but as I rub it into my skin I do get a more lemon, citrus undertone coming ever so slightly out of the perfume. I personally would prefer wearing this to go out on the town. It's sexy and mysterious because it is such a complex fragrance. Brought some warmth to cold winter days as well, there's just something about it that warms me up inside and makes me feel at ease.
Overall this is a great perfume and I definitely recommend purchasing some if you are able to! I got this for a steal off of eBay. I know they still have it on Lush UK sites under Volume 1. I would love to get my hands on some of the liquid some day and the three different parts! I will definitely update this post when I am able to smell them individually as well as the liquid version.
